It is quite interesting that Thanksgiving services were routine in the Commonwealth of Virginia in early 1607. In 1610, the first permanent settlement of Jamestown, Virginia held a thanksgiving ceremony.

In 1621, some pilgrims observed the Thanksgiving Day at Plymouth (a city of England) for three days. They reached there with a ship named May Flower. They made a feast as a part of their celebration. Four elderly pilgrim women cooked the feast.

Thanksgiving Day was first observed nationally in 1777 ordered by President George Washington. It happened after Congress requested him to celebrate on or more days in each year as Thanksgiving Day. That time it was being celebrated for honoring the defeat of the British reign. But that time 26th November was being observed as the day of Thanksgiving.

George Washington’s rule continued for a long time. Then President Abraham Lincoln was assigned to observe the Thanksgiving Day on the final Thursday of November month.  People of North America and England accepted that.

But again in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the fourth Thursday to observe the Thanksgiving Day. Even since, this is being continued till now. People accepted fourth Thursday rather than the fifth one. Because they could get more time to sell for Christmas. Thus, they got relief from anxiety about their economy.
